Alegria

notes
Saxophone giant Wayne Shorter's first live recording, Footprints live!, released in spring 2002, documented the first time he had ever toured as the leader of his own acoustic group, as he led a band of stellar young musicians, Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade, who each put aside their own highly respected bands to tour with Shorter. The recording was greeted with rapturous critical acclaim, including a rare perfect five stars from Down Beat magazine, anointing it a "classic".
Before embarking on the Footprints tour, Perez, Patitucci, and Blade had been recording a studio album with Shorter, his first in over eight years, which has become one of the most talked-about and eagerly awaited albums in jazz. The release of Footprints live! in advance of the studio album has only increased the fever of expectation, as the jazz world heard how Shorter and his young band inspired each other to make some of the most thrilling, imaginative improvised music since the celebrated Miles Davis quintet that featured Shorter in the 1960s.
Where Footprints live! showed Shorter undisputed master of small group jazz as he re-invented his own most famous compositions, Alegría finds him working with a broad palette of orchestral colors, including percussion, brass, woodwinds, and strings and drawing upon musical inspirations that span the past millennium. Alegría confirms that Wayne Shorter is the rare jazz master who is still an explorer and a pioneer. Alegría is epic, panoramic, transcendent jazz. "Alegría" means "joy" in Spanish, and Shorter's music is radiant with beauty and the spontaneous joy of discovery.?
