THE NYC JAZZ RECORD: Danilo Pérez at Newport 2017
"Inside the fort, a hard-hitting ensemble directed by pianist Danilo Pérez performed Quincy Jones’ 'Jessica’s Day' and Dizzy Gillespie’s 'Cubano Be, Cubano Bop,' with strong solos by trumpeter Avishai Cohen, tenor saxophonist Chris Potter and conguero/vocalist Roman Díaz, after which Pérez played an amazing solo rendition of Thelonious Monk’s 'Pannonica' followed by a full-band, 7/4 treatment of Monk’s “Off Minor”, featuring a powerful extended solo from Potter, who was later joined by Pérez."

The festival also provided two excellent avatars of the African musical diaspora in Latin jazz. Panamanian pianist-composer Pérez—a superbly mentored musician who worked with Dizzy Gillespie and has been a member of Wayne Shorter’s quartet for nearly 20 years—brought his Panama-centered “global jazz” to the stage with longtime cohorts drummer Adam Cruz and bassist Ben Street. Buoyed by Cruz’s Latin pulsations and Street’s anchoring basslines, Perez’s “Panama 500” danced with his country’s Afro-indigenous dance rhythms, and his centennial shout-out to Thelonious Monk featured riveting renditions of “Evidence,” “Think Of One” and “’Round Midnight.” Click here to read the full article.

"The (Wayne Shorter) quartet’s performance was beyond telepathy: It was the musical equivalent of quantum mechanics, all four men creating musical ideas, motifs and melodies at the speed of thought." Click here to read the full article
Puerto Rico Jazz Festival Review - El Nuevo Día

"Majestic and Magnetic" at Haiti’s Festival International de Jazz de Port-au-Prince
"Seeing Danilo Pérez (pictured top), Wayne Shorter's pianist of choice, is always special. Seeing Pérez play an intimate, after-hours set at the Quartier Latin, a bar in a converted mansion in the suburb of Pétion-Ville, while sipping Barbancourt rum and watching rain drip from the patio umbrellas and the leaves of the banana trees? That's an experience you don't forget." Click here to read the full article.
Jazz 100 Celebrates The Greats
"What pianist Danilo Pérez, a Panama native, has assembled is much more than a faithful rendition of old favorites: he takes the music of Dizzy, Ella, Mongo, and Monk, and creates something new, blending in his own laid-back Afro-Cuban style, and the results are something truly magical."
